Comment — Jesus is not physically a descendent of David or Solomon which he must be for Jesus to be the Messiah. Joseph’s genealogy is radically different in Matthew than in
Luke. Bible verses confirm that neither genealogy is that of Mary. In the following,
comments are given in brackets (…).
The discrepancies between Matthew and Luke are a strong indication that the Bible is
not an inerrant message from the God of the Universe.

- Luke 1:34
- 34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I
know not a man? 35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost
shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall
be called the Son of God.
Matthew 1:24
- 24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did
as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: 25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son:
and he called his name JESUS.
Matthew 1:18
- 18. Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on
this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before
they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
(According to these verses Jesus definitely had a virgin
birth)
- Romans 1:3
- 3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made
of the seed of David according to the flesh;
2 Timothy 2:8
- 8. Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David
was raised from the dead according to my gospel:
Romans 9:5
- 5 Whose [are] the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh
Christ [came], who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.
Revelation 22:16
- 16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, [and] the bright and morning star.
Acts 13:22 – 23
- 22 And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the
[son] of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my
will.23 Of this man’s seed hath God according to [his] promise
raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus:
2 Samuel 7:12 – 13
- 12 And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever. (Jesus must be of the seed {physical} of David through Joseph who is the physical descendent of David {Matthew} — but Joseph was not Jesus’ father because Jesus had a virgin birth — major problems here!)
- The next 2 sections are the most important ones on this page. They must carefully and patiently read them. Listing the names in a diagram is helpful
in keeping things straight. - The verses in Matthew must be compared to the verses in Luke. Both are the genealogyof Jesus — starting at different times, but both still the genealogy of Jesus. Both end
withJoseph and then Jesus, even though the Bible verses above say Jesus’ birth was a virgin birth. There are no Bible verses that indicate that one genealogy was Joseph’s and the other Mary’s.They all say both are Joseph’s genealogy.
Matthew orders the genealogy from the past forward to Jesus, while Luke orders the genealogy from Jesus back to the past.
- Matthew 1:1 – 17*
- 1. The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
2 Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob
begat Judas and his brethren;3 And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar;
and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;4 And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson
begat Salmon;5 And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;
6 And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her [that
had been the wife] of Urias;7 And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia
begat Asa;8 And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram
begat Ozias;9 And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz
begat Ezekias;10 And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon
begat Josias;11 And Josias begat Jechonias and his
brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon:12 And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias
begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat
Zorobabel;13 And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor;
14 And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim
begat Eliud;15 And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan
begat Jacob;16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
17 So all the generations from Abraham to David [are] fourteen
generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon [are] fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ [are] fourteen generations. (Problem #1: Abraham to Jesus {41 generations, instead of the 3 X 14 = 42 generationsmentioned in this passage, verse 17})
- Luke 3:23 – 38*
- 23 And Jesus himself began to be
about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed)
the son of Joseph, which was [the son] of Heli,24 Which was [the son] of Matthat, which was
[the son] of Levi, which was [the son] of Melchi, which was [the son] of Janna, which was [the son] of Joseph,25 Which was [the son] of Mattathias, which
was [the son] of Amos, which was [the son]
of Naum, which was [the son] of Esli, which was [the son] of Nagge,26 Which was [the son] of Maath, which was
[the son] of Mattathias, which was [the son]
of Semei, which was [the son] of Joseph, which was [the son] of Juda,27 Which was [the son] of Joanna, which was
[the son] of Rhesa, which was [the son] of Zorobabel, which was [the son] of Salathiel, which was [the son] of Neri,28 Which was [the son] of Melchi, which was [the son] of Addi, which was [the son] of Cosam, which was [the son] of Elmodam, which was [the son] of Er,29 Which was [the son] of Jose, which was
[the son] of Eliezer, which was [the son] of
Jorim, which was [the son] of Matthat, which was [the son] of Levi,30 Which was [the son] of Simeon, which was
[the son] of Juda, which was [the son] of Joseph, which was [the son] of Jonan, which was [the son] of Eliakim,31 Which was [the son] of Melea, which was
[the son] of Menan, which was [the son] of Mattatha, which was [the son] of Nathan, which was [the son] of David,32 Which was [the son] of Jesse, which was
[the son] of Obed, which was [the son] of Booz, which was [the son] of Salmon,
which was [the son] of Naasson,33 Which was [the son] of Aminadab, which
was [the son] of Aram, which was [the son]
of Esrom, which was [the son] of Phares, which was [the son] of Juda,34 Which was [the son] of Jacob, which was
[the son] of Isaac, which was [the son] of Abraham, which was [the son] of Thara, which was [the son] of Nachor,(Matthew’s genealogy begins here with Abraham. To compare the 2 genealogies this is as far as you have to go — the rest can be ignored.)35 Which was [the son] of Saruch, which
was [the son] of Ragau, which was [the son]
of Phalec, which was [the son] of Heber, which was [the son] of Sala,36 Which was [the son] of Cainan, which was
[the son] of Arphaxad, which was [the son]
of Sem, which was [the son] of Noe, which was [the son] of Lamech,37 Which was [the son] of Mathusala, which
was [the son] of Enoch, which was [the son]
of Jared, which was [the son] of Maleleel, which was [the son] of Cainan,38 Which was [the son] of Enos, which was
[the son] of Seth, which was [the son] of Adam, which was [the son] of God.
(Problem #2: Matthew says Jacob is Joseph’s father. Luke says Heli is Joseph’s father.)
(Problem #3: Matthew says David’s son is Solomon. Luke says David’s son is Nathan. — Matthew says Jesus is in the lineage of Solomon, but
Luke says Jesus is in the lineage of Nathan — Both cannot be true. So at least one of these 2 Gospels is false)
(Problem #4: Neither genealogy can be the genealogy of Jesus since it is through Joseph. If Jesus had a virgin birth, then it follows that Joseph was not the blood father of Jesus. Other verses say that the messiah must be in the blood lineage of David — see more verses further down on this page.
What is the sense of these genealogies if they are not Jesus’? One solution would be to say that Joseph was really Jesus’ biological father and Jesus did not have a virgin birth. But, Jesus not having a virgin birth contradicts the first Bible verses on this page)
(Problem #5: There is little agreement between Matthew and Luke in terms of Jesus’ genealogy)
- 1 Chronicles 22:9 *
- 9 Behold, a son shall be born to thee, who shall be a man of rest; and I will give him
rest from all his enemies round about: for his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness unto Israel in his days.10 He shall build an house for my name; and he shall be my son, and I [will be] his father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel for ever. (God of the Bible says
that any great person that establishes an everlasting kingdom must come through David’s son Solomon Problem #6: Luke doesn’t mention Solomon as being in Jesus’lineage. Luke mentions Nathan instead. This shows that at least Luke is false)
- Numbers 1:18 *
- 18 And they assembled all the congregation together on the first [day] of the second
month, and they declared their pedigrees after their
families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names,
from twenty years old and upward, by their polls.(None of the genealogies in the Bible trace the lineage of a woman. This further confirms that both Matthew’s and Luke’s genealogies are for Joseph, not for Mary,as some have wrongly thought. Again the virgin birth is a problem here.Problem #7: The virgin birth of Jesus by Mary contradicts everything about the 2 genealogies. You cannot have a
virgin birth and leave the 2 genealogies in the Bible without a MAJOR contradiction.)
- Luke 1:27 *
- 27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name [was] Mary.
Luke 2:4 *
- 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) (Joseph, not Mary is of the House of David. Confirming that Luke’s
genealogy was for Joseph, not Mary)
- Jeremiah 22:28 *
- 28 [Is] this man Coniah a despised broken idol? [is
he] a vessel wherein [is] no pleasure? wherefore are they cast out, he and his seed, and are cast into a land which they know not?29 O earth, earth, earth, hear the word of the LORD.30 Thus saith the LORD, Write ye this man childless, a man [that] shall not prosper in his days: for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting upon the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah. (Jechonias
was not to have offspring as mentioned in Matthew. This shows thatMatthew is false when it comes to prophecy.)
- 2 Samuel 7:8 *
- 8 Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David,
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel:
2 Samuel 7:12
- 12 And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy
bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.
Psalms 89:3 *
- 3 I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David
my servant,4 Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy
throne to all generations. Selah.
Psalms 132:11 *
- 11. The LORD hath sworn [in] truth unto David; he
will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set
upon thy throne.
(Messiah must be a physical descendent of David. Jesus is
not! — not if Jesus had a virgin birth.)
- Luke 1:36 *
- 36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
Luke 1:5 *
- 5. There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife [was] of the daughters
of Aaron, and her name [was] Elisabeth.
(Elizabeth was Mary’s cousin. Elizabeth was of the house of Levi
{Aaron}, not David)
